But such high quantities of caffeine -- 4+ cups of coffee every day -- has got to hurt us in other ways, surely.

I don't think the cost-benefit ratio is worth it.

I've cut down to one decent cup per day, after abstaining for over a week (I mean, a strong freshly-brewed cup bought on the high street). It prevents tolerance from forming, which means the one cup still has a very good kick to it. I've found when I drink too much coffee, I build up a tolerance, which means the good effects become less pronounced, and instead it leads to a jittery feeling. Caffeine overdose makes me feel nervous and sleepy.
