    JONATHAN
    Gender: Masculine
Usage: English, German, Scandinavian, Dutch, Biblical
Pronounced: JAHN-ə-thən (English), YO-nah-tahn (German) [key]

From the Hebrew name יְהוֹנָתָן (Yehonatan) (contracted to יוֹנָתָן (Yonatan)) meaning "YAHWEH has given". In the Old Testament Jonathan was the eldest son of Saul and a friend of David. He was killed in battle with the Philistines. As an English name, Jonathan did not become common until after the Protestant Reformation. A famous bearer was the Anglo-Irish satirist Jonathan Swift (1667-1745), who wrote 'Gulliver's Travels' and other works.

It is a bit ridiculous to claim that name and similar ones as "Semitic in origin".

It's like claiming there are "[almost] no European languages" -- Only Basque and a bunch of Asian imported languages

Greek, a deviation of Στέφανος (Stephanos).

Edit: The deviation isn't Stephen, it is "Stefan", just the wikipedia page was useful.

I don't see the comparison. By 'in origin', it means in which language your name/variant has some real meaning, nothing else.

It's why I put it as 'European other'. It is a "Germanic" name with Biblical influence, much like most European names.

Ah, either way I don't care. I always found it funny that my middle name is David and always asked my parents if they had named me from the Bible; but they hadn't.

    EDIT:

With you now. I still hold by what I said, but by your standard my name is Semitic.
Perhaps the poll could be altered to reflect my inncorrect choice?

Default Ethnicity of origin of my given name.

My given name is Martin. I was named after an uncle who was named after Martin Luther. However, the name is of Latin origin and originally meant "servant of Mars".

I don't think I can, or I don't know how to. But we'll bear that in mind.
