It goes beyond churches. Both Catholics and Protestants have used fear to keep the sheep in line in history, and it's lame to play "my team" with denominations when all of them terrified their congregants to keep them in line, so I won't start some "my team is best" religious war in this thread. Some ministers go off on "Catholic heresy" just like some priests go off on "Protestant heresy", and some Orthodox clergymen probably go off on both. This is about keeping control, as well as power, through fear, and this isn't just about religiosity, but it extends to *all* facets of life, from political soup to racial nuts.

I can't convince myself that death is anything more than a pointless end... I'm afraid of losing myself, my mind, my inner voice and memories. This was the feeling I had on a bad trip that death is such a black finish and I can't think otherwise

Maybe it is not totally pointless. We never know.
I thought the same but then I wondered what was before I was conceived.
And if you think about it, you realize that we all came from the state of non-existence to the state of existence.
Death I guess brings us back to the state of non-existence again.
But is there anything to prevent us to go from the non-existence to the existence again?
This brings me to the idea that we might be born again.

No. I desire life, but that’s not fear of death. I do care about what happens after, as a Catholic, but most people do.

It’s easy to see that our soul or animating principle is not our body: if the first principle of life is the physical body, then all physical bodies would be alive, which is not the case.

But, I agree with you, whether the soul survives death, is less obvious. Cicero has an interesting discussion about it in Book 1 (more like a long chapter) of the Tusculan Disputations.

I am not afraid of death. I am only afraid of leaving my daughter without her mother.

In fact, I think the church doesn't have enough "scare tactics".... because way too many people are still dying in their sins without knowing the Lord Jesus Christ as their saviour. And they have nothing to look forward to after death!

As for those dying in the Lord...we have nothing to fear, other than the holy fear of being in God's presence -- but that is something I'm looking forward to. So yeah, I don't fear death at all, in fact it is a pleasant thought to me.

Deep inside, I think I assume that when I die, I will be completely gone. So, my answer is yes.

Same here my friend. That is because you are agnostic / atheistic you have materialistic point of view. I believe that in the near term immortality will be possible though. I intend to freeze my brain anyway.
