Amish are cool people.

They live their lives isolated from mainstream society without bothering the mainstream society or trying to convert them.

To which I would add they represent one of the interesting and good paradoxes about the US: even though the country at one level is on the vanguard of standardisation, modernity and globalism, at the same time you can find an incredible range of cultures and languages within the country, including some that are extremely rural and traditional.

Colombia has a tradition of being quite progressive and even revolutionary regarding race (if not much else). Once slavery was abolished, ALL restrictions on Black people regarding marriage, sexual relations, voting and property were axed at once, and even many years before that a law was passed saying that all children who were half-slave, half-slaveowner had to be automatically freeborn. (This was in contrast to the US and Brazil, where it was up to the slaveowner's discretion what the baby's status would be).

Gadaffi's Libya was much better than the chaos that has replaced it. Similarly, Castro's Cuba is almost certainly better than the chaos that would eventually come in its place once it falls.

Governments and societies that may seem worse in theory are not necessarily so in practice. For instance, I still believe that Apartheid in theory is a rather worse idea than Communism, but it is rather hard to argue that South Africa was a more violent and authoritarian society/State than was the USSR.

Maybe ... but there are still Cubans that remember Cuba before Castro and long for it. Libya has been capitalistic and still is.

Batista's Cuba was a paradise for at most 5% of the population, and a hellhole for many more. Gadaffi was a socialist rather than a communist, but crucially oil was entirely nationalised and the revenue went towards various welfare and development programmes.
