These two truths about Science and Scientists need to be stated every once in a while.

Being independent can be great, but independence is a way overpraised and overrated value in the US and Canada specifically. There are other values that deserve more praise. Independence is even valued to an extent that's toxic by some people. And it is even possible to have all the "independent" things (drivers license/car, own house for example) and not be truly independent because either you didn't actually earn them in any form or you are still mentally immature or unprepared for life in spite of seeming "independent".
