They were so great .....that we kicked them out.
And then we chased them all around the World, expelling them from where possible because ......they were so great we couldn't bare to witness such magnificence.
But the Germanics actually were assimilated.(I wonder why)Maybe they weren't so great.

Is the Arab world the foundation of the European civilisation? No...
We have all those inventions, both of a practical and theoretical kind made by the ancient Greeks and Romans. Enter the middle ages, that is, the 5th century, where barbarians raged across Europe, most of these inventions were kept safe in the Middle East, which later became the center of the Arab World (much of the Arab science then was extremly Hellenistic). It is a fact that the Arab-Islamic World of the middle ages was the center of science, due to a much more liberal and tolerant approach to scientists (some arab scholars of that time were even openly atheist). Christians, muslims, atheists and all others flocked to them, and worked with them there, until again, Europe arose to become the center of science in the renaissance, and keep the possition later on.
IN short, you can think of science as money. The "money" from Greece and Rome went to the Arab "bank", where it was kept and few more funds were added before returning the "money" back to us. Thus again, the Arab "bank" is not the source of our wealth, but never the less, played a role in helping us keep our wealth. Today, we are sitting on a huge fortune, while the Arab "bank", mostly, bankrupted.

Lol, it's the other way around. Arab civilization was influenced very heavily by Greek and Roman civilization, and not just that, but it was also influenced by the people they conquered, Persians, Mesopotamians, etc.. Arabs have hardly ever had an original idea, or invention of their own.

Exactly, for sure the most striking mathematical and astronomical breakthroughs were acquired through conquests. The first Astrolab and the anticythera were ancient Greeks inventions. The myth of Arabs inventing astronomy is still floating around. They made some maps, fine tuned some observations but based on foreign technologies and transcripted knowledges.

Islamic contributions to Medieval Europe
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islamic...edieval_Europe
" From the 11th to 13th centuries, medieval Europe absorbed knowledge from Islamic civilization, which was then at its cultural peak. Of particular importance was the rediscovery of the ancient classic texts, most notably the work of the Greek natural philosopher Aristotle, through retranslations from Arabic. Also of note is the reception of advances in astronomy and mathematics made in the Islamic world during the 10th century, such as the development of the astrolabe. "
