What Ancient Amphipolis Tomb Looked Like

The magnificent tomb of Amphipolis, Greece, continues to fascinate the entire world. Ever since the first images that came to “light” about a month ago, the monumental burial site was enough to provoke astonishment.

This was only the beginning and it definitely hinted that something “big” was hidden there, creating not only admiration, but curiosity as well as increased expectations.

Several days after the initial discovery, archaeological excavations have brought several findings of unique beauty to the surface, such as two sphinxes that guarded the tomb’s entrance and two amazing Caryatids, with open arms, which also hints that this ancient monument is of unique importance.

The Greek Culture Ministry released its first design, a representation of the tomb, as depicted by the Ministry’s architect Michalis Lefantzis.

Althought i would love this as well, its unlikely since we have various historical sources locating Alexanders tomb to Alexandreia of Egypt.
I think it will belong either to Alexanders close family members, either to Cassandros himself, either to Alexanders sister and Cassandros wife-Thessaloniki- whom Cassandros adored and even built the known city to her name.

Its a very big and rich tomb, so it belongs into a very prominent figure.
Many spectaculate of the immidiate family of Alexander or a very important military figure.
    I guess, we will see

    Amphipolis: Caryatids’ Full Body Revealed

The new discoveries from the tomb of Amphipolis in Greece, that keep coming to light, have caused admiration across the world.

Photos released by the Greek Culture Ministry on Thursday show that the archaeologists have revealed the whole body of the two Caryatids that were unearthed on Saturday.

The Caryatids were “buried” in the ground between the septal wall and the tomb’s sealing. The face of the eastern Caryatid was found in the ground during excavations and will be attributed to the statue.

On Thursday, the first wall, sealing the front of the Caryatids, was removed, revealing the continuity of the two sculptures’ robes.

The robes’ folds are of great artistic value, while the Caryatids, from the outside, appear to slightly lift their chitons with the corresponding hand.

The archaeological team found out that the inner arms of the Caryatids did not support the architrave, as there are no indications of lead mouldings or processing of the lower surface of the architrave.

The project will proceed with the removal of the sandy soil in the area in front of and behind the wall with the caryatids. Up to the level of the marble roof, the two walls are covered with marble pillars, which mimic the enclosure wall.
