Could the 4th chamber hold the key to the Amphipolis riddle?

A new doorway discovered inside the ancient tomb at Amphipolis is considered to be a possible fourth entry to the tomb. The entrance was discovered after random checking in specific points of the north wall of the 3rd chamber and is considered a critical discovery.

This new finding reveals two major differences from the earlier findings. Firstly, this new entry is smaller in width than the earlier ones. Secondly, the new entry appears different to the other entrances in the relevant photos released by the Ministry of Culture in that it is shifted towards the left and not in the center of the fourth wall.

The distance between the two Caryatid statues and the sphinx guards are twice the size in width as they are 1.68 meters apart, compared to this new opening that is 0.96 meters wide and 1.68 meters high. This new finding confirms lead archaeologist Katerina Peristeri’s inference that the road to the main burial chamber will be a long one.

Why not? The Karyatids are scantily clad, I can actually see their nipples!

I shall masturbate at the pics of the Karyatids, and I won't ask for a permission from you. I am only waiting for an artists' impression which shall restore their original color, because they are paler than Hellenarses' butthole right now, and I can't get aroused with such a discoloration...

Amphipolis: Marble Door Found in Third Chamber

Archaeologists in Amphipolis have uncovered new evidence that corroborates speculation that Casta Hill is an ancient burial complex.

After removing a section of soil enclosed in the tomb’s third chamber, archaeologists found three fragments of a marble door. The marble appears to have originated on the Greek island of Thassos, as do the other examples of marble discovered in the tomb. Archaeologists are now assured that the Casta Hill complex is in fact a tomb.

It follows the standard form of a Macedonian tomb, they added.

Archaeologists have also uncovered a door hinge next to the marble fragments. Additionally, the excavation has unearthed several bronze and iron nails.

Stunning Mosaic Floor Revealed in Amphipolis Tomb

Archaeologists have publicized photos of a stunning mosaic floor recently excavated within the ancient tomb of Amphipolis in northern Greece.

According to the Greek Ministry of Culture, the beautiful mosaic was discovered in the second chamber of the tomb, the site of the Caryatids‘ discovery. The colorful floor was laid with white, black, grey, blue, red and yellow pebbles and depicts a chariot in motion. Hermes, the messenger of the gods, is pictured in front of the chariot.

“The central theme is a chariot in motion, pulled by two white horses and driven by a bearded man, crowned with a laurel wreath,” the Ministry said in a statement.

The mosaic showcases the artist’s ability to portray the figures, horses and colors in exquisite detail.

According to a Culture Ministry announcement, Hermes is depicted here as the conductor of souls to the afterlife.

The stunning artwork, which has yet to be fully uncovered, spans the entire floor of the second chamber. It currently measures 4.5 meters in width and 3 meters in length. The central scene is surrounded by a decorative frame, 0.60 meters in width, featuring a double meander, squares and a wave-curl design.

According to archaeologists, a section of the mosaic floor has been destroyed. The Amphipolis team was able to recover the disturbed pebbles during the excavation process, however, and plans on being able to eventually piece the mosaic back together.

The ministry says that archaeologists have dated the mosaic to the last quarter of 4th century B.C. (325-300 B.C.), consistent with their belief the grave contains the remains of a contemporary of Alexander the Great, the ancient Greek King of Macedonia, who conquered the Persian Empire and reached present-day India, Afghanistan and Uzbekistan in a whirlwind campaign, from 334 to 323 B.C. The grave may be that of a relative or general of Alexander’s, archaeologists have speculated.

Alexander himself, who died in Babylon in present-day Iraq at age 32, in 323 BC, is believed to have been buried in Egypt.

Tenant of Amphipolis Tomb is A Member of The Royal Macedonian Family

A detailed photo of the Hades figure in the new mosaic: part of the conjectural arm and detail of the possible bracelet in the lower right

In a press conference following the recent discovery of a stunning mosaic in the Kasta Hill tomb of ancient Amphipolis, Lena Mendoni, general secretary of the Greek Ministry of Culture, and Katerina Peristeri, head of the Amphipolis archaeological team, revealed the latest revelations concerning the progress of ongoing excavations.

Mendoni said that the scene of the abduction of Perséphone gives archaeologists great certainty that the occupant of the mysterious tomb is a member of the Macedonian royal family.

“We have also found the scene of the abduction of Persephone in the mural of the so-called tomb of Persephone at the royal cemetery at Vergina, Greece. We have a second display of Pluto and Persephone, in a sacred marriage scene at the backrest of the marble throne found at the tomb of Eurydice, mother of Philip, in Aeges. The scenes are linked with the cults of the underworld, the Orphic cult-descent into Hades and the Dionysian rites.

The leader of the Macedons was always the archpriest of these cults.

“I remind you of the recent survey of the National Centre for Scientific Research “Demokritos” for residues of the mask found in the remains of bones of Philip. According to experts, the mask was the one that Philip wore during Orphic rites. Therefore, the mosaic scene in Amphipolis has a symbolic importance, which may indicate that there is a relationship of the “tenant” of the tomb with the Macedonian royal family. The political symbolism is very strong at all times.”

Peristeri: Mosaic is unique of its kind

Peristeri, head of the Kasta Hill excavation team, weighed in on the importance of the newly-uncovered mosaic:

“We are very happy to have found such an amazing tomb, a really great burial complex, and even more proud and happy to have found a mosaic, which is unique. The mosaic dates back to the last quarter of the 4th century BC, with a unique scene which depicts the soul-escorting Mercury, Pluto and Persephone. It is definately the work of a great artist and it is a safe assumption to make that it is the tomb of a very important personality. “

    Missing Amphipolis Sphinx Head Discovered

Another amazing discovery has surfaced on the Amphipolis dig, Greece. The missing head of the Sphinx “guarding” the tomb’s entrance was finally discovered inside the third chamber.

The Sphinx’s head is intact, with minimal breakage on the nose. It has a height of 0.60m and it is assigned to the body of the eastern Sphinx. Made of marble, the head has signs of red color on its curly hair (falling onto its left shoulder) that is tied with a white stripe. It carries a pole and archaeologists characterize it as a sculpture of exceptional art. The head was found in a depth of 15cm inside a marble threshold. In addition, fragments of the Sphinx’s wings were discovered in the same chamber.

In a press release, the Greek Culture Ministry underlined that the excavation is in full progress, having reached the entire surface of the third chamber (4.5m x 6m) in a depth of 5.20m from the tomb’s top. In the coming days, archaeologists have scheduled the removal of fallen limestones from the third tomb chamber’s interior and parts of a newly uncovered gate will be revealed.

Position of Sphinx’s Head Raises Questions

The discovery of the missing sphinx’s head inside the third chamber of the Amphipolis tomb – 12 meters from the entrance– has raised several intriguing questions for excavation chief Katerina Peristeri and her team of archaeologists.

Why was the head found so far away from the body? “It’s a mystery. Apparently, it was moved by human hands,” Aristoteleio Univerity of Thessaloniki archaeology professor Theodosia Stefanidou-Tiveriou told Vima newspaper. She added that the broken nose and lips probably indicate that the head simply fell down.

The head of the sphinx was found behind the broken door that leads to the third chamber. As the archaeologists removed more earth, they found that the limestone floor was in disarray and stones were removed, as if someone had dug in that point. The damage on the floor does not appear to be natural.
