Ciao belli, what I wanted to know is what do you think of Istria and the Istrian Italians? Do you know which surnames belong to this community?

I am confused, some say that these are Italians, other Slovenes and others Croatians and you even have people saying they're mixed altogether. What are they?

    Grazie molto!

They are ethnic "Italians" in as much as people from Trieste are. I can't comment on surnames, but I know that until WWII, the towns were majority-Italian speaking.

after WWII, Italy lost 3/4 of Venezia Giulia region that was mainly composed by Istria, the islands south of it, and part of the coast of Dalmazia, 350.000 Italians fled from the region, because the Yugoslav partisans where advancing killing every Italian they met and throwing the bodies into cave-wells called "Foibe", the estimated number of casualties is about 11.000.
Whole villages and cities like Pola, Fiume and Zara where completely evacuated with ships, because the Yugoslav partisans guarded every road in the inner zones of Istria and Dalmazia, these regions were almost emptied from their inhabitants, only few Italians remained in the western coast, the empty places were took by Slovenes and Croatian immigrants. Most of the Italian refugees went to Trieste, while others were scattered throughout Italy, expecially in the towns founded during the fascist period, which were mainly populated by people from Veneto and Venezia Giulia.
Nowadays in Istria the situation seems to be better than in the past, the number of Italians is also increasing; about the surnames they should be related to Venetian surnames, because in the past Istria was part of the Republic of Venezia, and was colonized by Venetians
