I do not know about 'optimal' maybe genetically it's optimal. I have no idea how they calculate this. But I could never because there is a bond family has that is broken when you try to fuck/marry your cousins.

Well back then in some cultures it was a way to protect assets within the family in order for outsiders not to take advantage. Today there are legal means to protect assets so inter family marriages is not needed anymore. Also add the fact that back then people didn't move around as much as they do today. You didn't have much options back then and you may have probably not known you were marrying ylour cousin.

But to answer your question yes to me it is disgusting and illegal. Plus is not needed in this day and age when you have so much options to choose from.
