Should women drink?

In my family this is strictly forbidden, even a sip. I have never seen a female from my family even touch a drink. And to me this is expectation, women who drink I have stereotypes of them as if they are improper. I tried to shake this feeling once when younger by pretending it doesn't effect me, but it does.

This weekend I was on road trip with 6 other persians (3 girls, 3 guys). Except for one (who is married) the girls were single. When I would buy alcohol I only offered it to the guys and bypassed the women under assumption they wouldn't drink. One of the Persians then offered the girls my alcohol after I offered him, and one accepted just a sip. I apologized to the group that in my culture women don't drink and didn't honestly think to drink. The Persian guy laughed and said same in Iran, but people are more liberal in USA.

So as to apricity consensus.

Me it's a bit the opposite, we should think it's strange if anyone don't drink at least a glass of win or an aperitif. Of course not be totally drunk an spew everywhere.

He is very very liberal father then. I have been out of Serbia for while now, so I thought maybe I was out of touch on situation.

When I returned especially I noticed to my horror that in kafanas were some women. So I thought I was wrong. So my family organized big dinner for all family when I visited last September.

I quickly noticed all women were drinking water/lemonade/juice and all men beer/rakija/wine. So I asked as if pointed question: "I notice that a lot of women in Serbia drink but none of us" and one of the older women quickly jumps in

"It's a shame! They're shameless these days. My husband used to make his own rakija and I never touched a sip. You know why!?!? Because I'm a woman"

The younger woman around table stared passively, didn't make objection.
