It is mainly because Croatia and Northern Serb were under influence of Austro-Hungarian arhitecture rather than Byzantine/Russian.
One thing i noticed in Russia, very bright color of churches, such things won't be possible in lets say Serbia or Bulgaria. YI have even seen pink Church.
