Amazing Plant Sculptures In Mosaiculture Festival in Montreal, Canada

Flowers are beautiful on their own, or used to create something else entirely. A whole wide range of plants are necessary in order to create a sculpture like the one above–with deer running to and fro, horses galloping through water, and a goddess-like giant Zen at the center of it all. You see can this incredible plant-based creation at the Mosaiculture Festival in Montreal, Canada.

“Land of Hope” is the theme being celebrated at this years plant sculpture festival. The theme is subjective to many meanings, but at its heart is meant to spread awareness about the importance of taking care of our planet. In order for these gorgeous, detailed, and unmatched sculptures to exist over one million plants are necessary. In order to keep our planet populated with greenery, we must reconsider how we are treating the planet on a daily basis.

Check out these incredible creations, which include upwards of 800,000 different plants carefully combined together to look like something else entirely.

Artists from 20 different countries around the world helped bring these creations to life. The artwork at this unique festive is often mistaken for topiary, otherwise known as shrubs or trees shaped into creations. Instead these designs are far more intricate and difficult to put together. Horticultural art includes a complex combination of different living plants to create one sculpture.

The Mosaiculture International festival has the green certificate approval from the City of Montreal. The awesome collection of work is growing in popularity, each year it generates more and more visitors. In 2013, over 1 million people visited the collection within a span of only 76 days.

The gorillas above look so real, I imagine they are about to move at any moment!

According to the official press release from the 2013 festival, “…respondents especially appreciated the majesty, originality, and great beauty of the sculptures.” Highlighting the festivals 13th year up and running, the success of 2013 made the festival a reoccurring treat yet again this year. In 2014, the festival has returned with more incredible sculptures than ever before.

Without the collaborative efforts of the Montreal Botanic Garden and Quebec’s Horticulture Society it would not be possible to pull this event off year after year. Thanks to hard work and a handful of talented artists, the festival has gone on without a hitch since 2000.

While the first festival was not until held until 2000, Mosaiculture of Montreal was created back in 1998. The Mosaicultures International of Montreal is a non-profit organization that creates products and services revolving around mosaiculture.

The first international competition drew attention from many different groups, including landscape architects, horticulturists, and participating cities. The designs were, and continue to be, so unique. Sparking both inspiration and innovation in related areas.

According to an official press release for the event, the festival earned upwards of 30 million dollars for Quebec in 2013. This money was largely generated by tourists as well as the costs associated with creating the exhibit. In fact, over half of the people visiting the area at this time came to the festival.

It’s incredible how artists play with the plant textures, such as the ‘furry’ looking plant used to create the dog’s fur, pictured below.

From June 22 until September 29th, these plant statues adorn the Montreal Botanical Garden. Tickets range in price from $10.25 to $29.50. If you miss out on the fun this year, rest assured this incredible attraction is open every year around the same time, a tradition since 2000.

Behind each of these statues is a story, and an entry in the competition. At the end of the festival, awards are handed out to the most stunning creations on site. Judging by these photos, is there any particular green statue you think deserves to win?
