I'll list three, actually, whose stories informed my boyhood fantasies of adventure beyond the mundane existence of small town New England, all introduced to me by my dad from his stash of books:

Howard. I love these ages, those are really the most important (and long) ages for humanity, where our cultures and imaginarium were really forged.

Who knows? I suppose it's possible. He lived with his mother all his life, and rarely left the house. He didn't have any friends or romantic interests, except for other writers and his fans whom he corresponded with.

and the female-archetype provided by his mother
as manipulative emotion-draining vampires.

the practical reason
for him remaining in the family home
was the great depression (during which time
he was the top income-earner in his town)
and his parents needed his assistance to survive.

If so, then for me they would be Hermann Hesse, Rainer Maria Rilke and the Brothers Grimm.
Whenever I hear someone say that they dislike the German language, I find myself thinking it's because they've never read any of these authors' original works.
I love Hesse so much that I have a series of photos with his poems written on skin.
