The position of French in France

I've lived in Marseille. While an important (compared to other cities) part of the inhabitants don't necessarily speak French natively (lots of recent immigrants), everybody speaks it at some level. I've never met someone who couldn't speak French, even among the gipsies that came from Romania at the time and camped everywhere they could.

What I said was said wrong. Of course people speak French in Marseille, but you can hear a lot of Arabic and I doubt that more than 50% of the population natively speak French or parents were native French speakers.

You're wrong again. While the central area is part of the Northern half of city, with an important share of immigrant, overall there's maybe 25%/30% of immigrants/descendants of recent African immigrants. That's still absolutely huge compared to the country.
