There has been studies into all different dimensions, which includes parallel universe. I heard a rumor that the people in the parallel universe are full of swarthy people with monobrows!

It's only proven this one has really fine tuned physics equations. By imagining a larger structured universe beyond what we see, and regions with slightly different tuning (planks hints this), we assume "other/failed universes" could exist. The multiverse proposition also resolves some of the time paradoxes that are permitted by our current physics model in a single universe (and we assume nature HATE this kind of paradoxes). At human psychology level, it's scarier to imagine a universe with limits than none, even if it's a single immense one. It could fit somewhere in the partial string theory as well to get some of the missing extra dimensions, it's a valid questioning, but nowhere near undeniably proven.
