Thanks... so that would be a long journey in a single day if it's 3-4 hours to the countryside and another 3-4 hours back to Amstdam, and I guess it gets dark there early at this time of year, but I heard the Netherlands is a safe country to travel alone in the dark, and it would be nice to see the countryside there for a day in the winter.
I think it could be achieved in a single day to take a train and ferry ride early in the morning from London to Amsterdam, then to take a train from Amsterdam to the countryside, then spend a few hours wandering around the lakes, then take a train ride back to Amsterdam, and then rather than paying for the expensive hotels in Amsterdam, take a train straight home to London again in the late evening from Amsterdam.
