You mean from Amsterdam into the countryside ? It depends on where you want to go. Much of the country is in 3 or 4 hour radius from Amsterdam.

Thanks... so that would be a long journey in a single day if it's 3-4 hours to the countryside and another 3-4 hours back to Amstdam, and I guess it gets dark there early at this time of year, but I heard the Netherlands is a safe country to travel alone in the dark, and it would be nice to see the countryside there for a day in the winter.

I think it could be achieved in a single day to take a train and ferry ride early in the morning from London to Amsterdam, then to take a train from Amsterdam to the countryside, then spend a few hours wandering around the lakes, then take a train ride back to Amsterdam, and then rather than paying for the expensive hotels in Amsterdam, take a train straight home to London again in the late evening from Amsterdam.

May I ask if the food in the cafes are expensive in the Netherlands, like just for a basic sandwich or a small cup of warm tea... and are there clear warning labels on the menus as I'm anaphylactic.

It really depends on where you go. Bars (we call them cafe's) here generally don't offer meals but if you want a sandwich, you can buy one at a sandwich store or a bakery (generally between 2 and 6 euro as depending on what you want) and bars offer tea as well for about 2. Some bakery's offer warning labels but I think they're supposed to be on the plastic wrapper.
