The French have been historically called the "Cousins" of Italians, but now it is also common to refer to the Spanish this way as well.

I think some Italians feel close to the French but the French don't feel close to them, the same way Greeks feel close to Italians but Italians don't feel close to them.

I doubt they would feel closer to an Eastern European country with another clime, paysage, religion and phenotype. genetic science shows them they're closest (even overimposed) to Greeks but I think they're closest to Spaniards and Portuguese in feeling (clime, history, paysage, religion has to do with it). but Italians do have a strong original feeling form abroad too so I wouldn't put "=" between them and other peoples, like I wouldn't put "=" between French and others

I disagree, we feel close to Italians. Of course not all regions, specially the ones with a common border or some historical link with another country. I used to live in Northern France, center and now in the South, and i think most people feel this way, not just in the South. I wouldn't go as far as "cousin country" but by default, we feel closer to Italians.

In overall culture, culinary art, even litterature i would say, we are closer, than say German, Spanish or British. Other countries around feel a bit more "alien" to us.
