If you behave the culture, you can fit in almost anywhere. Especially if you're not of different race. There even exist white Japanese people (people born there who speak Japanese as their mother tongue), though they are rare. No matter how good you speak that language, you will be able to work there and even live there and treated with respect, but you won't be one of them.
Still the most important thing is to accept yourself and don't worry whether society accepts you IMO. Society will put its stamp on you anyway. Fitting in is no problem if you're contributing.
The man in Sojourner's example is an old man who speaks the language fluently and lives in Russia for more than the half of his life. He probably became an honorary Russian. It's still rare I think for such a thing to happen. Depends also how much you contribute to your new society.
