Ok, thanks for this info. So apparently the video I watched is misleading. The majority of Latinos do not identify as white on it. Only 2-3% of Americans are 'white latinos.'
Yet still I think that they should add a new racial category to the census.
Then why are "Non-Hispanic Whites" only 62-64% in the U.S. according to wiki:Very few Latinos of any kind define as white.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non-Hispanic_whites
They used to be >70% but that was before the 2000 census (69%) and in 1990 76%:

Do Spanish-Americans and Portuguese-Americans identify as "Hispanic" as well?

Usually not I should think, but Cuban Americans, who usually are white, will, for example.
As you can see, in 2010 only about 91% of the population were white, black, asian or native. That's almost 10% non-white latino.

Perhaps someone has already brought this up, but in the US, Middle Easterners and North Africans are categorized as Caucasian. Did you take that into account when looking at statistics for Caucasian/White populations in the US (the two terms are used interchangeably here).
Good job on the statistics, I love statistics myself.

It's not a lie if you believe it.
Out Of Africa Theory is a lie.

But North Africans and Middle Easterners are few in numbers in the USA. For example in the 2000 census such ancestries were reported by 2,190,000 people (including 1,940,000 as "1st ancestry"). Various Iberian ancestries (mostly Spanish and Portuguese) were reported by some 3,670,000 Americans in 2000. Data on self-reported ancestry from 2000 census: http://www.speedyshare.com/ZAjCX/1st...ry-US-2000.xls
And yes - it seems that U.S. Census Bureau counts people of European, Iberian ancestry as "Hispanic-Americans" as well.
So there is no distinction made between Mexicans and Iberians when it comes to Hispanicness.

Based on census data from this file on ancestry responses in 2000:
http://www.speedyshare.com/ZAjCX/1st...ry-US-2000.xls
I made this graph (legend is below) showing 1st ancestry responses:
Ancestry not reported - people who did not report any ancestry
Uncodeable entry - ancestry reported but impossible to read
Religious response - I suppose answers like "Jewish" are included here
Names of U.S. states - responses like "Virginian" or "Californian"
Mixed - includes responses such as "my ancestry is mixed".
Can, Aus, NZ - Canada, Australia, New Zealand
BIS - British Isles (English, Irish, Scottish, Welsh, etc.)
CEu - Central Europe (mostly German ancestry)
WEu - Western Europe (includes South-Western Europe)
EEu - Eastern Europe (Polish is the largest ancestry here)
Scn - Scandinavian 1st ancestries (including Finnish)
Balk - Balkanic ancestries (South-Eastern Europe)
Generic Eu - reports like "European", etc.
NAfr, MEast - North African, Middle Eastern
SE Asia - South-East Asian ancestries
India, S Asia - India and South Asia
CeAm, SAm, WIndies - Central & South Americas, West Indies
Sub-Sah Afr - Sub-Saharan African ancestries
Pacific - Pacific Islanders, Oceanians
Native Am - Amerindian (Native Americans from both continents)
=============================
The most mysterious issue is what are the ancestries of people who did not report their ancestries? And what is the racial / continental breakdown among them (how many of them are European-Americans)?

PS: When you download the file then ignore "Sheet 3" and "Sheet 2", data on ancestry from 2000 census is in "Sheet 1".
