Central America. The ones from El Salvador and especially Guatemala were more brutal and murderous. We had Rios Montt, he was a genocidal maniac who annihilated nearly 600 villages. Up to 200,000 Guatemalans were declared missing or killed due to the Guatemalan civil war, and it was under him that most people died. At the height of the bloodshed under Ríos Montt, reports put the number of disappearances and killings at more than 3,000 per month.

Southern Cone dictatures were positive, specially Pinochet in Chile; in Argentina la Junta Militar disgraceufully could't reach a good economic point and nowadays the country suffers the consequences, because the economic shock that Argentina needs can't be done in democracy.

Central American dictatures were a continuation of banana republic governments, as the actual democracies. But these countries doesn't deserve another thing, the population is what it is, non-capable of reaching a peaceful society and a prosperous economy.

But my favourites ones are the dictatorships of the 50's: Pérez Jiménez in Venezuela and Trujillo in Dominican Republic.

Actually, the Argentinian junta did carry out a number of free-market reforms, even if not quite to the same extent as did Pinochet.

Another point is that many who died were leftist terrorists.
IMO both were bastards, the military junta and terrorists in equal.
Yeah, I read something about that high number of 30,000 being an exaggeration, without documented sources, from leftist organizations, in order to play the victim.

I'm not in favor of the countless human violations that took place during the Argentinian military regime, but I also know that many of the victims of the Argentinian dictatorship (not necessarily all, though) were not exactly innocent and idealistic people who only wanted a better world without hurting anyone, as lefties pretend to make it look like. So, the military repression didn't come out of the blue for nothing. It was in response to countless terrorist acts, coming from urban guerrillas like Montoneros and ERP, among others.

I try to analyze and view all this issue in a very non-partial and objective way.

When I pointed it out in a discussion with Costas in my thread about Marcos Perez Jimenez, he responded to me in such a hard way that made me feel like if I was a jerk for pointing it out. I even made apologies and everything, but fuck it.

Perez Jimenez didn't sound that brutal, and nor was he totally a US puppet like Juan Vicente Gomez clearly was.
