I've been a Fender guy all of my life, I've got tons of Strats and a Tele, but I'm about to buy a Les Paul (an Epiphone, the real deal is too pricey), just for once, to see what's the deal.
PS: the last axe I bought is a Squier Classic Vibe Stratocaster. I really recommend it despite the "squire" brand. Classic Vibe rules.

Guy, You never should ask about an instrument.
First you need know yourself!
Each instrument have its own sonority, thus a correct knowledge about the sonority you want, will give the answer for you.
Don't exist a good or a bad musical instrument. Weapons don't kill people, people kill people using weapons. Musical intruments don't play music, people play music using musical instruments.
The fender is like a slender and aggressive girl, the gibson is a bodied and sweet woman. A Fender could be good for a hardcore, metal and other heavy sounds, the gibson is more jazzy,bluesy, folk, smooth.
But you can put a chili in your jazz with a fender, or fall as a feather in your heavy metal with a gibson.
Everything depends what sonority you what.
Self knowledge is what you need.

I have this guitar 40581.jpg I bought from a friend, I learn by myself and when I'm in the mood so my guitare is nice enough.
I'll more likely get a classical guitar though because metal sometimes is boring...
My friend has an Yngwie malmsteen fender with those weird frets and it sounds very nice.
