Default What was the most tolerable/benign Cold War dictatorship?

I'd argue that it was possibly the Brazilian military junta (1964-85). Both in relative and absolute terms, it was much less murderous and repressive than the dictatorships during the same period in the Southern Cone and Central America. Furthermore it was, needless to say, much less repressive and overbearing than either the USSR or its numerous client regimes in Eastern Europe, Africa and the Far East. Basically, provided you stayed out of political activism, chances are that you could be left alone in that regime.

I find it incomprehensible that any leftist totalitarianism(or right wing) was tolerable in any way, shape or form. "Much less murderous" is still murderous. Though I will concede the Sandinista system was the most "benevolent" however it was forced collectivization, no matter how democratic it may have been.

I don't really know the names of the dicators but South Korea after civil war acheive big accomplishments. They were at the level of black african country and they transform it in a modern and succeesful country. So I don't if it was really tolerable, but the result are here.

Yugoslavia under Tito, it was bad but a lot of people got quantifiable benefits from it.
