They're the same language, Dutch (few people call our variant Flemish though, but don't be fooled it's Dutch). But accent-wise they sound different enough to have a preference of course.

I can understand Flemish slightly better with my German. While living in Belgium I would mostly watch Flemish TV stations, not the French ones.
