2014 Moldova population census - preliminary results

The total population of Moldova (without Transnistria) is 2.913.281 (that's 470.051 less people than 10 years ago/2004 census).

Regarding ethnicity:

56,8% have declared themselves moldovans vs 75,8% 2004 census
23,2% - romanians vs 2,2% 2004 census
7,6% - ukrainians vs 8,35% 2004 census
5,46% - russians vs 5,95% 2004 census
3,89% - gagauz vs 4,36% 2004 census
1,64% - bulgarians vs 1,94% 2004 census



Regarding language:

40,3% declared that their maternal language is romanian vs 16,4% 2004 census
38,4% - moldovan vs 58,7% 2004 cnesus
13,2 -russian vs 15,99% 2004 census
3,3% -ukrainian vs 3,85% 2004 census
3,06% - gagauz vs 3,10% 2004 census
1,06% - bulgarian vs 1,14% 2004 census

Regarding gender:

51,58% - Women
48,42 - Men

Prior to this I didn't know that there was a Moldovan language. I thought it was just another dialect of Romanian, like the other dialects of Romanian language.

There's no such language as Moldovan. It's basically Romanian language with a different subdialect.

A few observations:

Significant population decline. The percentage of moldovan/romanian population has increased by 2 points (compared to 2004). A lot more moldovans declared themselves romanians (23% vs 2%). Almost thrice as much declared they maternal language to be romanian. Minor decline for all the other ethnic groups.

Is there any chance that Moldova and Romania will become one political entity? Did they ask any questions about it in the census?

I haven't followed Moldovan debate so I don't know how to interpret the figures. But I don't think that all those who opted for Moldovan are necessarily against uniting with Romania. It's just that they have been politically separated for a long time, and then it makes sense for them to think of themselves as de jure Moldovans?

If a referendum on the issue of union between the 2 states would take place today it would most likely fail in Moldova. In 10 years time it would probably succeed.

Hm I thought the Russo-Ukrainians were at least 1/4 of the population and apparently some of them declare themselves as Moldovans.
