I am looking at Bulgaria, and there's nothing unusual there. Ergo, it's just Romania and I doubt that those guys in California care enough to curate to local taste. It's a simple count function.

No, it's not a count function. If you look at the views of manele released 2 years ago and made it to the top, they have far fewer views than regular pop vids from 2 years ago that never reached the top.

Also, curation is not done in California obviously. These lists are curated locally. Youtube claims they curate them only so that "violent" material does not get at the top. We're are talking about "violence" in the progressive sense, so curation is done by left-wing groups. And of course, curation also takes into account commercial interests. Today we have 2 major media groups that promote this shit (Antena and Kanal D). This was not the case just a few years ago.

There are objective reasons why manele has risen in the charts in the past few years (they gained support from some of the media conglomerates). That said, calling a trending list where two thirds of the entries are manele, realistic for Romania is nonsense. Only about 10% of the population listens to manele exclusively, maybe 20% actively search for manele among other kinds of music. But 50% of Romanians hate manele with a passion. This has been deemed racist as of late so youtube is taking measures to correct it This oversized influence of manele is only on youtube and not on any other kinds of media.

I've said this over and over again. You are part of the diaspora, so completely irrelevant when it comes to discussing about local trends. Come home and prop those numbers for non-manele music up, if you care so much. I will trust what I see.

I go home every year. Being part of the diaspora means nothing these days. I'm part of the Romanian trends as much as any other Romanian, trends that include migration btw.

You don't hear manele in Romania, other than in the occasional taxi, intercity bus and "dughenele de pe litoral". I trust what I see in real life not online.
