As irrelevant and insensitive as this may seem, I must say that, having watched all the coverage of the atrocities and demonstrations in France over the last few days, I was reminded of the fact that, as groups at least, French and British people don't really look as similar as some make them out to be. While both are very varied, it is undeniable that (a) as a whole, the French are noticeably darker-pigmented than the British, especially regarding the hair and eyes (less so the skin) and (b) regardless of (a), there are lots of Alpine types in France that are much rarer in Britain. A prime example is Bernard Cazeneuve, the Interior Minister, who of course was giving lots of speeches and interviews.
