Not every Slavic people have that amount of east eurasian admix, Russians live with many Ugrics/Turkics, it is a wonder that they don’t show more east eurasian.

Nowadays Bulgarians are Slavic, the name giver people were Turkic, which just came with small numbers, they were just a strong rider people. Because of that they didnt left any genetic trace.

Of course Christianity and literacy come from byzantine, and later from the Slavic people in the Bulgarian empire.
But if were not for the "yellow Asian horde", today whole Balkan slavs was without identity, and then during the ottoman empire they would most probably all turkicized, because is thanks to the "yellow bulgar" if a slavic identity and a slavic powerful empire emerged, this was possible by defeating the bizantine, and then by making a strong Bulgarian empire wich was the craddle of slavic civilization
If this wasn't happened, the slavs were just like hippies, wich would probably colonized and assimilated from someone.

Anyway is still hard to have many information about them, their history have quite a lot of mistery, only some ex-yugo (especially Macedonians) and Turks, seems to have the key for the truth, of course their truth, wich is the key for their national propaganda
Wikipedia says Bulgarians have 5% from Bulgars, because it thinks they were Turkic, Bulgarian have a lot of Alan-like (Iranic) DNA, which came from Bulgars. Bulgarians should be around 7-15% Bulgars, the most Bulgar Bulgarians are probably Bulgarian refugees from Northeast Bulgaria, who live in Ukraine and after them maybe other northeast Bulgarians

Although there is a chance of Onoghurs mixed in the Caucasus and indeed brought Caucasian heritage to the region, modern Bulgarians are still lacking any 3rd admixture compared to other South Slavs except for the known East-Med shift. Therefore searching Proto-Bulgar heritage among Slavic Bulgarians is wrong from the start.

On the other hand, we already have an Onoghur Bulgar sample from Great Bulgaria. No need for more speculations.
