Western isles ran seperate from the Scottish Kingdom for a while. under the Lordship of Isles. They were a gaelic-Norse hybrid & were in civil war with the Scots Kingdom at one point..
This episode documents the event between the Norse gaels & Scotland. Stewarts vs MacDonalds.

Rob Roy MacGregor is easily one of the most famous Scottish Highlanders to have ever lived. He is seen by many as a Robin Hood type figure who was a very honourable man who did all he could to help and protect his clan. He was known as a very good cattleman during his life. He has also traditionally been viewed as a staunch Jacobite. However there is an alternative theory that apparently has some pretty damning evidence is that he was in fact a British spy. It is probably hard to say which is actually 100% true. SOme think he may have even been a spy for both sides for the benefit of himself and his immediate family mainly. Either way he is still a very interesting historical figure.

A good video about the history of Clan MacNeil. Genetics has shown that many of them are indeed of Norse descent in the paternal line.
