Default Apartheid-era South Africa or post-Stalin USSR: which was more oppressive?

A perfectly legitimate, serious, non-trollish question. Was it worse to live in a strictly racially segregated society with countless controls and restrictions where, nonetheless, for a portion of the population there was a (sort of) parliamentary democracy and a (sort of) open media? Or a society which, while promoting equality and unity on the surface, was actually a one-party State where wealth and power varied depending on how far up the Party one was placed, and where various restrictions and controls also occurred?

I'm no huge fan of the USA, but worse than Apartheid or Communism? Be serious now.

It's funny, because in older threads you were very critical of Mandela and downplayed how cruel and oppressive the Apartheid regime was.

Anyway, I think that Mikhail Gorbachev and FW De Klerk are two of the 20th Century's greatest leaders, precisely because they brought these two appalling tyrannies to a (relatively) peaceful end.
