Lilibeo (Modern Marsala)
In their dominions the Romans founded some colonies especially in the existing cities. The Roman colonies in Sicily were important for their strategic points, Lilibeo becomes the most important Roman colony in Sicily because it was the capital of the Roman Province of Sicily and Palermo becomes finally a city in that period. Most of the colonies were more likely an importation of families and mainly of Veteran soldiers from Latium and with their families moved in these cities. The Greek language officially speaking in the pre-Roman Sicily was flanked by the Latin one (Italic tribes like Morgetes,Sicels and Mamertines spoke already an Italic language but not the Latin) and Sicily becomes bilingual.
