Yes. Far more laidback when it comes to those things. Blood-pressures come to bursting point when the Stormers play the Blue Bulls but afterwards everyone is happy regardless of whether they won or lost. No. Firearms are illegal unless you have a license, and licenses are very strictly regulated. I haven't personally gone through getting a gun license but from what I hear its quite a rigorous procedure. They don't just issue anyone with a license and no gun shop will sell you a firearm unless you have a license. The average joe in the street doesn't know how to fire a gun. If there is a break-in in your house you have a bigger chance of getting shot with your own firearm than not. On that basis people who want protection usually have a cattle prod. If someone breaks into your house, they're more scared of a cattle prod than a gun.

People who live in rural areas and farms are usually armed to the teeth because they have to be. Because these areas are so far from the beaten track the chances that the police will arrive in the next 2 hours is remote and they need to protect themselves.

But if you mean gun-toting in the American sense where every Tom, Dick and Harry owns an Uzi, the answer is no.

South Africans are not highly militaristic. They used to be 40 years ago when they whole Apartheid thing was still going on and there was this "army fetish", but since the mid 90's there is no conscription to the army and 40 years have passed with younger generations who have never seen the army. The ones who went to the army during the mid-80's to mid-90's did so because they had to and not due to any patriotic feelings. The types who are still militaristic are usually in the 60's age group and there aren't many of them. If anything, South Africans are probably some of the most laid-back people you will ever come across.

Rape, murder, theft and other nasty crimes. BUT you have to realise that there are some areas more dangerous than others. It's not like there are rapists and murderer lurking at every corner on every street.
