No, that is not what that study says. The study says that Russian mtDNA is most similar to Central European populations, which just means that Russians have no maternal admixture from the native populations of the area. Which confirms the autosomal data: Russians are more or less pure Slavs from Central Eastern Europe. Paleo-Europeans were known for their high concentration of U5. As all Finno-Ugrian populations have higher concentration of U5 than Central Europeans, then something here obviously does not click. If North Russian mtDNA should show higher affinity to Paleo-Euro, it would automatically do so towards Finno-Ugrian too.

Karelians, Vepsians mixed with Slavs in the past;hence they're similar to Slavs. Helsinki Finns are similar to northern Swedes. Estonains are similar to Balto-Slavs. Baltic Finns is a mystery in term of autosomal DNA the way I see it.
