There are five layers that make up your epidermis, the outermost layer of skin - the one that you see when you look at yourself. They are the stratum germinativum, stratum granulosum, stratum spinosum, stratum lucidum, and stratum corneum. They may not be listed in the proper order, it's been about six months since it was my turn to teach physiology and histology of the skin in school.

Anyway, regardless of your racial heritage, you have these layers of skin in your epidermis. The stratum lucidum is formed from densely packed dead cells that have been fully keratinised. They are packed like bricks and reflect light back. We all have them but only on the palms of our hands and soles of our feet. You notice them on people of darker skin because the reflective quality of this particular stratum does not allow for stimulation of melanocytes to the extent that it occurs elsewhere on the body, so those areas remain lighter than the rest of their skin. If someone with light skin gets a tan their palms and soles will still be light.

It has nothing to do with whether or not we as a species started out lighter or darker.

The difference between Africans and Europeans goes beyond palm color. Things like our skull, genetics, stuff like that tells us only one thing that is we may be Homo Sapiens but we are two different branches of the greater Homo Sapien race.
