Default Why did Bosniaks convert to Islam?

What was the reason Bosnians became Muslims?

I heard that before they converted to Islam they were Bogomils.

What factors led to their conversion?

Opportunism to a certain extent, but mostly a lack of character and principals.

Priviledges. Being a muslim in Ottoman Empire was easier than being a Christian.

    Short answer: privileges.

Long(er) answer: bogomils were put off by Christianity because of their hostility towards Bogomils and people generally go with the flow. Bogomilism was also very weak so it couldn't last long under the Ottoman empire. The Bosnian Church also had much less control over its adherents.

Is there any information on how widespread Bogomilism was? Logic dictates it was a minority considering how easily it was wiped out, but I'm still curious.

No one knows exactly since there aren't many historical records about Medieval Bosnia and not much research has been done in the area compared to other medieval countries, but I remember reading one historian who suggested it may have mainly been restricted to the nobility. That sounds likely to me.

We use Bogomilism as a simplification, Bosnia was a refuge for all heretics who were persecuted by both Orthodox and Catholic churches. There was no strong Christian authorities in Bosnia like it was the case in other nations, so what the Bosniak people practiced was probably a pseudo-Christianity.

Usually converts to Islam were the oppressed and underclass...so the better question should be...what was the social dynamics of Serbia prior to the Ottoman conquest, who were the oppressed classes and why.

There are 2 reasons. The first initial reason is to get back at the King, Pope, Hungary and other christians.
The last 2 Bosnian kings were the first kings in history of Bosnia who persecuted people based on religion. The hierarchy of Bosnian church was killed while the believers were forced to convert. That memory was still fresh. With anger and resentment towards Christians who persecuted them, and having to face that their theologians are dead, most converted to Islam.

The second reason is sincere belief. Over the next centuries Bosniak catholics converted to Islam gradualy due to interaction with local muslims, suffi dervishes or missionaries.
    Hi everyone!
