Default Bosnian castles, forts and towers

    Srebrenik Fortress

The castle was first mentioned on 15th of Febuary 1333.

It was controlled by and the home of Ban Stephan II Kotromanic until his death in 1353.

In September 1363 a Hungarian army was sent into Bosnia.
The invading army besieged Srebrenik but was repulsed and it is said that the Hungarians suffered great casualties during the siege.
Also among the lost in this battle was King Louis's royal seal.

2 years after the death of Tvrtko I Kotromanic 1391, it was captured by Hungarians for the first time.

Between 1391 and 1512, when the Ottomans finally captured the castle,
Srebrenik was the location of many battles and sieges between various armies including several
during a war between Bosnia and Hungary in the early 1400's during which a Bosnian army tried
on several occasion to retake the fortification without success.

*pls if you contribute to this thread limit posts to one castle and in addition to pretty pictures pls try to provide some background info if there is any. pls. ty.

    Gradačac Castle

Evidence of an earlier fortification exists but most of what is seen today was built by the Gradaščević family between the years 1765 and 1824.

In 1878 during their occupation of Bosnia the Austrians encountered only a small opposision garrison in the castle.

    Šćepan grad/Bona

Originaly built in 948, the castle became on of the main forts of Zahumlje region

Situated on top of a 275 meter karst hill, it had a comanding view of nearby terrain and controlled the trade routes going towards Ragusa

The walls were 12-14 meters high

Due to supperior construction it remained in use until early 19th century, when an explosion of gunpowder stores ruined the castle and destroyed the central residence

Only eastern side was possible to assault, with the remaining 3 closely following the cliffs

    Remains of the castle armory

Three gates and 2 gatehouses guarded the entrance into castle proper

The central Kosaca palace is today no more than a mound of rubble, due to a massive gunpowder store explosion in 19th century

An overview of the site, with 2 wells, a church/mosque, granary and baracks visible

Its curently under conservation and reconstruction efforts of Bosnian government

    Velika Kladuša Castle

A small part of a medieval castle survived and was repaired but the castle took it's current appearance sometime in the 1630s.

It was the home of Bosniak folk hero Mujo Hrnjica and is often referred to as Mujo Hrnjica's Castle.

The castle was the last to surrender during the 1878 Austro-Hungarian occupation of Bosnia.

    Bobovac
The royal seat of Bosnian kings.

Once upon a time... Illustrations of Bobavac in it's glory days.
The walls surrounding the city were over a kilometer long.

Settlements in the area of Bobovac date back to Illyrian times, then into Roman, and finally into Medieval times
when the castle that's seen today was built by Ban Stephen II Kotromanić(Other parts to the city continued to be constructed
until the 1400's). It's first mentioned in documents dating back to 1350.

Being one of the best defended cities of medieval Bosnia it was naturally chosen as the seat of rulers of Bosnia,
from first Ban who founded it until the fall of Bosnia.

Ottomans captured the city in 1463 and after taking control they razed a part of the city.

    Ostrožac

Ostrozac is located in North Western Bosnia and is first mentioned in 1206.

The fortress fell to Ottomans in 1577.

The ruling powers occupied the fortress and added extensions. The castle dates from the Austrian era.

Nowadays, cultural events, concerts and mariages are celebrated in Ostrozac.

    Kastel Fortress

Banja Luka had at one time two fortresses. One in Gornji Šeher, which no longer exists, and another in Donji Šeher which is the Kastel Fortress seen today.
Kastel was turned from an arsenal into a fortress sometime in the late 1500's/early 1600's.
It was renovated in the early 1700's and brought in line with the Vauban/Star Fort style of fortification.

The walls range from 6 to 8 meters in height and 2 meters deep.

(Map of the Battle of Banja Luka)
On the 23rd of July 1737 during the Austro-Russian–Turkish War an Austrian army numbering around 17000-20000 reached Banja Luka and after demanding surrender from the city's Bosniak defenders, who were led by Mehmed Ćatić, laid siege to the fortress.
From July 27th July until the 4th of August the Austrian forces bombarded the fortress and it's some 3000-5000 defenders, about ~1800 projectiles were fired at the fortress daily.
The defenders of the fortress managed to hold out until August 4th when a relief force of some 15000 that had gathered from all corners of Bosnia reached the besieged city and by August 5th had forced the Austrians into a retreat.

    Doboj Fortress

The earliest reference to Doboj is in a letter from a Dubrovnik inhabitant to King Sigismund, dated 28 June 1415.
The letter was written at a time when King Sigismund was outside Doboj with the Hungarian army.

Illustration of the castle in the middle ages.

In the late 17th century – 1697 – Austrian forces campaigning in Bosnia under Eugene of Savoy sacked the fortress and occupied it for a short time.
In 1718 Austrian forces occupied it for a second time, again only briefly.

On August 8th the 20th Division of the Austro-Hungarian army was beaten back from the Tuzla area and forced to retreat back to Doboj, reaching it on 14th August, losing hundreds of men in the process. Once reaching the town they found themselves besieged.
