Eating dog meat was a tradition in east asia*, but nowadays not every east asian still do that: Certain areas such as Korea and Vietnam, dog meat is still commonly eaten. In (mainland) China dog meat is commonly eaten in certain areas and ethnic groups, such as Guizhou & Guangxi, for metropolitan areas such as shanghai and beijing, most people consider dog as "men's best friend" and think eating dog meat is an uncivilized action (due to urbanization and westernization), eating dog meat is uncommon; For certain ethnic groups such as Tibetans and ethnic Hui, they don't have a tradition of eating dog meat. In my areas Hong Kong, slaughter of dog and eating dog meat are illegal, moreover, most HK people refuse to eat dog meat due to the influence of western culture during british hk period. In Taiwan - slaughter and consumption of dog meat is illegal as same as HK, although eating dog meat is also a tradition for many taiwanese aborigines. In Japan eating dog meat is extremely uncommon nowadays; People used to eat dog meat in the past until 675 A.D, when Emperor Temmu decreed a prohibition on its consumption during the 4th to 9th months of the year. Plus Japanese people believe that certain dogs have special powers in their religion of Shintoism and Buddhism.
Eating dog meat is also common in southeast asia too, but i don't really know the situation of eating dog meat in southeast asia.
*i consider Vietnam as an east asian country due to Vietnam is a part of east asian cultural sphere, but geographically Vietnam belongs to southeast asia.
