    Wrong

michael/miguel are direct cognates of each other, not just names that mean the same thing.

smith/schmidt/de set are all essetionally the same surname, just like trump/drumpf
So what? They're cognates but also clearly distinct.

I have touched on the subject with some past girlfriends of mine, and given that I have unique family names, none objected to the idea of taking my last name.

When the day comes and God forbid I actually breed I'll have to ditch some of those family names for the kids, because I'd like them to have her last name and then mine (main one), otherwise my kids' names will become too unwieldy.

I think I mentioned a reason now, did I ? Dutch law does not allow me to pick any names not in my family line unless there is a real necessity (my wife's name, upon marriage, would be an exception).

I personally don't care if my future wife doesn't take my surname, but our kids will have both of ours, that is a must. With my genealogical research I figured out my surname isn't my real surname, somewhere in the 19th century it swapped positions between Spanish and Portuguese forms, (MS+FS), so I ended up having a third or fourth great-grandmother surname (don't recall now), and she got it from her father. We follow the Iberian tradition, we have two surnames.

I wouldn't take my wife's surname, only if there was a very very good reason for it.

The wrong part was saying most Americans have unique surnames.

I wouldn't care either way, it would be her choice, but I'd never take her name.
