When my German ancestors immigrated to America in the 1850's and 1860's, there was no German nation. My ancestors came from the area known then as the grand duchy Mecklenberg-Schwerin in northeastern Germany.

My family owned orchards (olive and nuts), and raised goats in Marchal for many years.
