After a day that left downtown Toronto looking like a combat zone, with vehicles set ablaze and store windows smashed, the city is bracing for more disruptions Sunday. At least 400 people were arrested Saturday and early Sunday.
While protestors and police clashed in the streets,leaders from the G20 nations met Saturday inside a heavily fortified enclave in downtown Toronto. The prime minister and his wife, Laureen, greeted the G20 leaders and their spouses at a reception at the Royal York Hotel and the leaders gathered for a working dinner. The G20 is expected to ask countries to cut their deficits in half by 2013, a draft of the final communiqué obtained by the CBC's senior business correspondent Amanda Langs says.
On Saturday, G8 leaders strongly admonished North Korea and Iran for their nuclear activities in a unanimous statement at the end of the G8 summit in Huntsville, Ont. At the close of the summit, the leaders released the G8 Muskoka Declaration, noting the importance of security and global development.
On Friday, the first day of the G8 summit near Huntsville, Ont., Canada pledged $1.1 billion to its global initiative on maternal and child health for developing countries.
