To call it 'temporary marriage' is being euphemistic. It "Muta" literally means pleasure or enjoyment.

I dont find prostitution disgusting, it is the oldest profession...what is disgusting is giving that a veneer of religiosity and ofcourse making what is haram, halal. prostitution if legalized or not, that decision should only be placed on secular politicians. A mullah who will lead prayers, give sermons etc etc, is also a pimp on the side and makes money off a girl who is married for '30 minutes to 30 days' or whatever?? That to me is vile. tbh I dont even think it is a shia thing because non Iranian shias dont do this.

Iranians just adopted the old Jahiliyyah Arabic tradition. Although Sunnis since the time of Sahaba look down upon this practice, they do have a debatable concept in Sunni Islam called nikah al-misyar which is basically comparable to the nikah mut'ah of Shia infamy.

The fact is it has always been extremely common for men on long journeys or those who went to work in other nations for them to temporarily settle down with a new family, and so nikah mut'ah attempts to cover for this. However, it's a temporary marriage for pleasure.
