I heard that arsonists are re-setting the fires after the main fires have burned out.

Premier John Brumby has announced there will be a Royal Commission into the weekend bushfires.

He made the announcement while touring bushfire-devastated areas today.

Government sources said it had not yet been decided who would chair the commission or when it would start.

One of the key issues to be considered by the inquiry will be Victoria's decades-old "stay and defend or leave early'' bushfire policy.

An emotional Mr Brumby said the Royal Commission would look at all issues.

But he said it was important to remember that nothing could have prevented some of the weekend devastation.

"What broke over the state was like a tsunami,'' the Premier said after flying in to an emergency relief centre at Alexandra.

"It didn't matter how good people's fire plans were.

"When the wind changed - particularly around Kinglake - when it came back up the hill there was nothing that anybody could have done.

"It wouldn't have mattered if you had 1000 tankers there.''

Earlier today Premier John Brumby said Victoria may need to review its bushfire policy of "stay and defend or leave early" in light of the state's appalling weekend death toll of 108 at last count.

Mr Brumby said the Government would this week initiate a full investigation into the fires and the lead-up to them.

He said the Government and authorities' long-standing approach of advising people to have a bushfire plan ready to either stay to defend their homes or leave well before the fire became a threat had in many cases not saved people at the weekend.
    http://www.theage.com.au/national/br...0209-81zx.html

There are now reports the death toll could go over 200.

Politicians are saying there will be a increase in penalties for Arson. Bullshit. Where's the proposed legislation with mandatory sentencing provisions?.

Instead of blubbering like a retard and announcing Royal Commissions/enquiries/generic inept bureaucratic response, John Brumby could actually use this opportunity do something tangible here. All the Premiers could.

Could be 250+ dead, our Engineering branch in Melbourne were finishing at midday last week because of the heat.

This latest bit of info, in relation to what a pentecostal pastor supposedly dreamt about, and why he believes the decriminalising of abortion laws in Victoria has precipitated these bushfires!

In the real world, you stupid wanker, the real reason behind these fires are - and always will be - because we have crazy arsonists who can't see beyond lighting a fire, the damage they actually inflict by doing so!

I wouldn't like to be you right now, trying to justify your pathetic remarks to those innocent families and communities who have lost practically everything that had meaning for them in their lives!

Default Arson unlikely in most of the fires say police.

ARSON is unlikely to be the cause of most of the bushfires that ravaged Victoria on Saturday, including the deadly Kinglake complex blaze, according to a special police taskforce.

Assistant Commissioner Dannye Moloney said the Phoenix Taskforce, which was announced yesterday to investigate the causes of the fires, had divided the bushfires into six regions, only one of which was now being treated as suspicious.

He said information from residents and firefighters led police to suspect arson was involved in the fires that started in Churchill and spread to Hazelwood and Callignee, killing at least 21 people. He said police were looking at those in the area with a history of arson or crime, but no arrests were imminent.

Investigators have not yet established whether the fire around Marysville, Narbethong and Murrindindi Mill was suspicious and forensic tests are ongoing.

However, arson has been all but ruled out at Wandong, Kilmore, Humevale, Kinglake, Taggerty, Mudgegonga, Maiden Gully, Bendigo and Redesdale

Mr Moloney would not say how police thought those fires started but said their findings would be presented to the State Coroner, Judge Jennifer Coate, for her inquiry.

He said police had planned to release sketches of men believed to be involved with the Delburn complex fires late last month but had changed their minds because of fears high emotion would spark a public witch hunt.

"If we put a similarity of somebody up it could cause a major issue in regard to their welfare and safety," he said.

While Mr Moloney asked those with information to come forward, he warned against an increase in rumour-mongering about how the fires started.

"It's really sad to think that somebody might be pointing the finger down the road at somebody who is absolutely innocent — and what a crime to be accused of if you are innocent," he said.

Police are also investigating a small suspicious grass fire that flared briefly in the township of Stanley, near Beechworth.

This might be of some consolation to the families of the vast majority of the victims. Govt (especially local and state) needs scapegoats for their incompetency. The media spotlight will be focussed on them more so now, hopefully.

I also think the Federal Government has been utterly pathetic with the financial relief for victims. The heavy lifting has been done by goodwill of the public, small and big business, which at this point have raised somewhere around 100 million dollars.

Maybe Krudd and his supertard posse could divert some of the BILLIONS of our much wasted "foreign aid" and actually give it back to the people they took it off, who now need it, Aussies.

The USA and European countries have been the only ones I'm aware of that have offered help and kind words. This should be taken notice of by Australians.

Currently it still is sitting at 209 dead. Many in ICU will not make it. The money raised is not getting through to the victims.

Its a disgrace the way the people are being treated.

Abbos mock the efforts of our firefighters, muslims set more fires and laugh as we burn to the ground, the USA demains money for their help, the watermelons scream about us clearing safe grounds...

so my idea is stuff them all.....
