    So overall Irish are lighter.
Well now the truth is that according to the 2012 GWAS study on pigmentation in four European countries (Ireland, Italy, Poland, Portugal), where skin, hair and eye colours of the following populations were compared and studied thoroughly. The study was led by Candile et al and also with the collaboration of universities in the respective countries. The Irish group came out as the lightest in skin, hair and eye colour, followed by the Polish group as I already expected. Yes for sure the Irish have on average a lighter skin complexion than continental Europeans, this is due to a higher frequency of red hair genes.

In terms of light hair, the English especially and Scottish as a whole have higher frequencies than both the Irish and Welsh. The area of England which corresponded with the historical Danelaw has the highest incidence of fair and light hair in the British Isles due to the fact that it was strongly settled by the Anglo-Saxons, then Vikings. However the Irish have as a whole a higher frequency of blue eyes than most English, Welsh and Scottish.

Biggest difference is in facial features I think, and height. Germans are taller, more robust and blonder but also tan much more than pale Brits. Still, Southern Germans are not really nordid, because of their part Celtic roots. I think you make differences between Brits and other NW Euros bigger than they are.

Please do not be confused. Northern Germans and Irish people are not identical, but are similarly light-haired. The difference is that Northern Germans have more of the ash-blond shades, while the Irish have more of the red/reddish/auburn hair. When we combine red+blond+light/medium brown hair this accounts for 65% for Northern Germans and 64% for the Irish.
Here are the faces of Irish football team players from the match of Ireland against Denmark on November 11, 2017.
They are much more dark-haired than the Poles and Germans. I see only three players with a light hair. Most of them have different shades of brown.

Do you think this hair colour could be common in the UK and Ireland?

Most Poles are brown-haired too, though blondes are common. The first two people there aren't of European descent.

The highest frequency of blond-haired and blue/light-eyed people in the world is found in Scandinavia, Iceland, Estonia and Latvia definitely not Germany as many have stereotyped it! Equally the highest frequency of red-haired, freckled or very pale-skinned people is found in Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Northern England. Now since red hair is much more recessive gene than blond, in Celtic nations pale/freckled complexion with brown hair are common though they are carriers of the ginger gene.

Dan Kelly (Irish) fathered eight children with Barbara-Ann Suokko (Finnish + Tyrolean). Some have blond hair, some brown. Paddy Kelly, who is the most Irish looking, has dark brown hair and blue eyes.
