    Russell-Cotes Museum, Bournemouth.

"In 1901, Merton Russell-Cotes gave his wife Annie a dream house on a cliff-top, overlooking the sea.
It was an extraordinary, extravagant birthday present – lavish, splendid, and with a touch of fantasy.
They filled this exotic seaside villa with beautiful objects from their travels across the world,
and lined the walls with a remarkable collection of British art, creating a unique atmosphere in a most dramatic setting.
A home, an art gallery, and a museum. Then they sealed it in time, and gave it to the future."

The famous poet and writer Percy Bysshe Shelley
and his wife Mary Shelley (the author of Frankenstein)
have a legacy in Bournemouth and even though neither of them were from Bournemouth,
they both had their hearts in the town.

Before Mary Shelley died on February 1 1851,
one of her last requests was to be buried in Bournemouth,
even though she had never lived in the town.

Her wish was fulfilled - as was her request for her already deceased parents to be re-buried with her.

Shelley's widow Mary bought a cliff-top home at Boscombe, Bournemouth in 1851.
She intended to live there with her son, Percy, and his wife Jane,
and had her own parents moved to an underground mausoleum in the town.
The property is now known as Shelley Manor.

The family plot in St Peter's Church, Bournemouth,
includes the remains of Percy Bysshe Shelley's heart.

There are also local pubs, restaurants, parks and even a dental clinic in Bournemouth named after Shelley.

Dorset is also known as 'Thomas Hardy Country'.
The English novelist and poet Thomas Hardy, OM (2 June 1840 – 11 January 1928)
was born and died in Dorset.
A Victorian realist in the tradition of George Eliot,
he was influenced both in his novels and in his poetry by Romanticism, especially William Wordsworth.
Charles Dickens was another important influence.
Like Dickens, he was highly critical of much in Victorian society,
though Hardy focused more on a declining rural society.

Thomas Hardy's Wessex (Wessex is the Saxon name for the area of Dorset, Hampshire and Wiltshire,
and where King Alfred the Great was born and lived.
King Alfred the Great kept the Danelaw (who ruled over north-east England) out of the south-west and Wales,
when England was divided into two. Later, the Victorians (who were said to love the legacy of King Alfred the Great
attributed the English language being saved courtesy of Alfred the Great.)

Maiden Castle is a giant hill fortress (the largest in Europe) which the Celts
built in Dorset to keep out the Romans.
A nice Scottish man narrates this video.

The south-western counties of Dorset, Devon, Somerset and Cornwall are still referred to as King Arthur's West Country.

A mass grave of beheaded Vikings was found in Dorset.
The local folk executed the invading Vikings
as a method of self-defence from being attacked and raided.
King Alfred the Great also helped to keep out the Danes from ruling over the south-west of England and Wales.

King Arthur was said to have won his greatest battle
against the Saxons at Badbury Rings in Dorset.

During the English Civil War, Dorsetshire people sided with the King
and stood against Lord Oliver Cromwell (the King killer)
and Cromwell went to Dorset to crush the rebellions against him,
and destroyed Corfe Castle in Dorset,
and then he went to Ireland and caused the genocide
    of a million Irish people.

The West Country of England (South-West England) and Ireland share similar rural landscapes and farmlands,
ancient and sacred stone circles, and even similar rhotic accents.

Beaulieu is a village set in the heart of the New Forest, in the southern English county of Hampshire,
very close to Bournemouth on the eastern edge of the neighbouring county of Dorset,
(Bournemouth was historically a part of Hampshire until 1974.)
Beaulieu Palace House is a 13th-century house owned by Lord Montagu
and the surrounding British National Motor Museum (originally the Montagu Motor Museum.)

Beaulieu Palace House was originally built in the 13th century as the gatehouse of Beaulieu Abbey.
Following the Dissolution of the Monasteries,
the estate was purchased by Sir Thomas Wriothesley, later 1st Earl of Southampton, in 1538.
The house passed through marriage into the Montagu family
and is still owned by his the 1st earl's descendant,
Edward Douglas-Scott-Montagu, 3rd Baron Montagu of Beaulieu.

The house was extended in the 16th century, and again in the 19th century,
and is today a fine example of a Gothic country house.
The house overlooks Beaulieu River and is surrounded by lawns and walkways.
The inside of the house has been kept in a Victorian style.

Although still home to the current Lord and Lady Montagu,
parts of the house and gardens are open daily to the public.
It is a member of the Treasure Houses of England consortium.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beaulieu_Palace_House

The Palace House is open to the public as part of the visitor attraction known as "Beaulieu", which includes:

    Beaulieu Abbey
    National Motor Museum
    Beaulieu Palace House
    World of Top Gear
Secret Army Exhibition - an exhibit about the Special Operations Executive training at Beaulieu during World War II
    Gardens
    A monorail
    Rides

    http://www.beaulieu.co.uk/#

Beaulieu is located within easy reach of the popular tourist destinations
    of Bournemouth, Southampton and Winchester.

Beaulieu is an award winning attraction
set in the heart of the New Forest National Park.

The picturesque hamlet of Bucklers Hard, with its Georgian cottages
running down to the Beaulieu river is part of the 9,000 acres (36 km2) Beaulieu Estate.
It was the "birthplace" of many British naval vessels,
including many of Admiral Nelson's fleet,
using the timber of the New Forest.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beaulieu,_Hampshire

With just one entry ticket, visitors can view over 250 vehicles
    in the National Motor Museum
telling the story of motoring on our roads and racetracks.
Visitors can re-live memorable challenges in World of Top Gear –
and see exclusive behind-the scenes footage featuring the stars of the show.
Visitors can experience the Victorian splendour of Palace House
as costumed guides give a flavour of life `below stairs`.
Visitors may stroll through the grounds & gardens
and explore the tranquil ruins of Beaulieu Abbey,
which houses an exhibition on the monks that once lived and worked here.
The Monorail provides public rides for sweeping views of the park,
and visitors can uncover the covert role played by Beaulieu
during World War Two in the Secret Army Exhibition….
    And much more besides!

Classic and futuristic cars are amongst the vehicles on public display at Beaulieu.

Edward John Barrington Douglas-Scott-Montagu, 3rd Baron Montagu of Beaulieu
(born 20 October 1926) is a British Conservative politician well known in Britain
for founding the National Motor Museum,
Lord Montagu gained an interest in motoring from his father —
who had commissioned the original "Spirit of Ecstasy" mascot for his Rolls-Royce —
and with his family collection of historic cars this led him to open
the National Motor Museum in the grounds of his stately home,
Palace House, Beaulieu, Hampshire in 1952.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_...gu_of_Beaulieu

The museum was founded in 1952 by Edward Douglas-Scott-Montagu,
3rd Baron Montagu of Beaulieu, as a tribute to his father,
who was one of the great pioneers of motoring in the United Kingdom,
being the first person to drive a motor car into the yard of the Houses of Parliament,
and having introduced King Edward VII (then the Prince of Wales) to motoring during the 1890s.

    Athelhampton, West Dorset

Athelhampton (also known as Admiston or Adminston)
is a settlement and civil parish in Dorset, England,
situated in the West Dorset administrative district
approximately 5 miles (8 km) east of Dorchester.

It consists of a manor house and a former Church of England parish church.
    Dorset County Council's 2013 mid-year estimate
of the population of the civil parish is 30.

    Manor

The Domesday Book records that in 1086 the Bishop of Salisbury,
with Odbold as tenant, held the manor, then called Pidele.

The name Aethelhelm appears in the 13th century,
when Athelhampton belonged to the de Loundres family.
In 1350 Richard Martyn married the de Pydele heiress,
and their descendant Sir William Martyn
(who was Lord Mayor of London in 1492) received licence
to enclose 160 acres (65 ha) of land to form a deer park
and a licence to fortify the manor.

    Athelhampton Hall

The hall is a Grade I listed 15th-century privately owned country house
on 160 acres (65 ha) of parkland. It is now open for public visits.
