Cornwall looks beautiful & has thriving tourism. Never understood why it it houses some of the poorest areas & Growth in the UK.

Many in my family love the place.

True, although I think the crime rates are low there. Also, the EU laws affects their fishing industries.

The Isles of Scilly

''The Isles of Scilly are an archipelago lying in the Atlantic
off the south west coast of Great Britain.

They've long been associated with Cornwall
although their status with Cornwall is as uncertain as Cornwall's status in England.

Originally the islands formed one island and submerged settlements have been found.
The islands had a lot of contact with the western fringe of Europe
and many megalithic monuments litter the islands.

The inhabitants were originally Cornish but over the centuries many English people from Devon
and elsewhere in the south west settled due to the strategic importance of the islands and the fishing grounds.

The inhabitants today are split fairly evenly between English and Cornish,
most have both ancestries and the inhabitants identify as "Scillonians" and have their own flag and council.

Many of the islands are named after Cornish saints, but the Cornish language
itself disappeared from the islands earlier than it did from the mainland of west Cornwall (Penwith)

The Isles of Scilly have perhaps the mildest climate of anywhere in the UK
and have a particularly beautiful landscape.''

Cornwall has a lot of beaches. Strong sun is very bad for the skin so loads of skin protection is needed to prevent sunburns and other skin problems during the summer. I use parasols and loads of high spf and broad spectrum lotions and special protective clothes if I have to walk around in the sunlight. I grew up on the south coast and didn't find the sea water cold during the summer months as a child. Cornwall is beautiful, but I couldn't live there due to the level of the sun being too much for my liking. I want to be somewhere where it rains a lot and where there's little sun.

I have bathed all my life in col´Nordic lakes and seas and I still think that the Atlantic waters of England and Ireland were my coldest summer-swims. The difference is that the Irish waters look cold while Cornwall looked like a playa del sol

Welsh and Cornish are the 'purest Britons', scientists claim.

Natives from Wales and Cornwall could hold the title for the "purest" Britons, a scientific study suggests.


Those in south east and central England were described by Donnelly as "a real genetic cocktail",
with parts of their DNA matching the pre-Roman population, Anglo-Saxon and the Danish Viking settlers.

Scientists drew up a map of the British Isles revealing the genetic ancestry
of people from different rural areas across the UK.

After extensive DNA surveying, they found that Welsh and Cornish people
were among the most genetically distinct groups in the country.

One theory for the difference in their DNA is that they are a "relic" population,
tracing their ancestry back to the tribes that colonised Britain after the last Ice Age 10,000 years ago.

Welsh genes proved to be similar to those of the French and Irish,
suggesting they were connected to the pre-Roman population.

The Cornish were also shown to have a distinctive DNA make-up,
different to those from the neighbouring county Devon.

Peter Donnelly, professor of statistical science at Oxford University
and director of the Wellcome Trust centre for human genetics,
confirmed the distinctiveness of people from the two regions.

He said: "The people of Wales and Cornwall are different
from the rest of southern and central England."

But the most genetically distinctive of all British people were those of the Orkneys,
who were shown to have Scandinavian ancestry,
dating back to when their islands were controlled by Vikings from AD875 to 1472.

It may come as a surprise to the people of Norfolk
that their DNA was little different to those in the rest of the south.

Tradition has it that residents from the area are descended from the ancient Iceni tribe.

Some 2,000 rural dwellers were analysed in the survey,
and all had to have four grandparents born in the same area.

Once I met a Swedish person in London who was shivering and complaining that it's cold as we were standing outside and I said to him that I thought he'd be used to the cold since he was from Sweden, and he said to me that it's a different type of cold in Sweden. He said that it's a dry type of cold they have there, whereas here in Britain it's a damp type of cold which goes through peoples bones.

There's a higher percentage of people who die annually in Britain from cold weather than in Scandinavian nations. Once the Moscow Ballet Company arrived in London and a news article stated they complained about it being cold. Well it was unusually colder than Moscow on the day they arrived. But a few years ago in London during New Years Eve, the temperature was recorded as being hotter than Morocco on the same night.

We had some small bush fires in Dorset and we get annual heatwaves for a few weeks, but the weather is mostly mild without extremes of heat and cold, and no deadly spiders and massive earthquakes, fire tornadoes, or the type of hurricanes and weather problems seen in other countries, etc. So I think we're quite lucky in many respects compared to other nations. We have four different seasons which I like too.

My family used to take long walks along the beach every boxing day and there would be a lot of other families walking along the beach in December, and sometimes it felt so cold and windy, but other times it felt mild during the winter.

I played in the sea in the summer months as a child until I started getting phobias of sharks (which was a bit irrational considering this is Britain) and sometimes it felt cold, but other times it felt warm to me.
