The term is first known to have been used to refer to a people living in northeastern Ireland. In a letter of April 14, 1573, in reference to Ulster, Elizabeth I of England stated, "We are given to understand that a nobleman named 'Sorley Boy' [MacDonnell] and others, who be of the Scotch-Irish race...” This term continued in usage for over a century before the earliest known American reference appeared in a Maryland affidavit in 1689/90.
The name Scots Irish is a misnomer. Ulster Irish, descended from Scottish settlers, is a fairer description as very few emigrated from Scotland to the US.

Scots Irish states by the numbers:

    - Texas 287,393 (1.1%)

    - North Carolina- 274,149 (2.9%)

    - California- 247,530 (0.7%)

    - Florida- 170,880 (0.9%)

    - Pennsylvania- 163,836 (1.3%)

    - Tennessee- 153,073 (2.4%)

    - Virginia- 140,769 (1.8%)

    - Georgia- 124,186 (1.3%)

    - Ohio- 123,572 (1.1%)

    - South Carolina- 113,008 (2.4%)

    - North Carolina (2.9%)

    - South Carolina, Tennessee (2.4%)

    - West Virginia (2.1%)

    - Montana, Virginia (1.8%)

    - Maine (1.7%)

    - Alabama, Mississippi (1.6%)

    - Kentucky, Oregon, Wyoming (1.5%)

    http://www.irishcentral.com/roots/an...-way-down.html

Anyway I'd just presume that as time goes on the proportion of the population that are Scots-Irish would decrease. I mean Scots-Irish wouldn't marry other Scots-Irish but would likely marry people of other ancestries. Also Scots-Irish came to the US centuries ago now so the amount of people identifying as such would be decreasing.

Another reason would be that people are just identifying as American.
How the hell do you know if you are Scots-Irish ? I have Ancestry from Ulster (Donegal), England (there were English settlers in Ulster), Scotland, Alsace-Lorraine France (weren't there like French Huguenots and like Palatine Germans or whatnot in the Scots-Irish mix ?) and ancestry from Southern Ireland but rather than over complicate things just picked French as my ancestry due to my Norman derived last name Burke (DeBurgh) and my ancestry from Alsace-Lorraine France and for all I know my ancestry from England and Scotland could be Norman or primarily Norman too but I never bothered to take a DNA test.

Anyway, Burke (Deburgh) is ancient and aristocratic English and Norman-Irish compared to peasant Celtic and Anglo-Saxon names.

Yep. There were Welsh settlers too. You descend from the Burkes. I descend from the Fitzgeralds. That may explain things.

Yeah, well the Fitzgeralds are another Norman family. I don't really give a shit about all this Celto-Germanic Scots-Irish bullshit the bottom line is that the Celtics and Anglo-Saxons are natural peasants while the Normans are their natural aristocratic ruling class masters. All the Celtic and Anglo-Saxon peasants of Britain, Ireland and America can bow down and kiss my aristocratic French Norman ass.

It's true that the Fitzgeralds are descended from Normans. However, they, like the Burkes, also are descended from Gaelic Irish people. You have "natural peasant" blood running through your veins. Your ancestors are more Irish than the Irish, themselves. I bet that your ancestors would celebrate Saint Patrick's Day if they were alive today. Of course, they would be very old!

Yeah, I'm so motherfucking Irish that one of my grandmothers was half Scottish and English and my other grandmother's ancestors were all straight up French from Alsace-Lorraine France etc.. also, nevermind the fact that I don't look Irish at all. I've had people tell me I look British and others say I look French, though. So that 'more 'rish than the irish themselves' is some kind of bullshit that someone made up that had an agenda of some kind.

The fact remains that anyway you motherfuckers want to try to spin it the Celtics and Anglo-Saxons are peasants and the French Normans are their natural aristocratic masters. So you my dear, who is probably a peasant pretending to be a Fitzgerald Norman, can bow down and kiss my aristocratic ass.

The Norman aristocracy in England was soon replaced by the Angevins with Henry II in 1154. Also:

1204, 24th June - Philip II of France enters Rouen and annexes Normandy to the French Kingdom.
The fall of Rouen meant the end of Normandy's sovereign status. By August, Philip had taken Normandy and advanced south to occupy Anjou and Poitou as well. John's only remaining possession on the Continent was now the Duchy of Aquitaine.

Probably absorbed by the larger WASP category, along with low birth-rates.

Interesting fact : a tiny bit of the duchy of Normandy was forgotten, thus it still legally exists as a possession of the English crown in the form of the Channel Islands.

France should invade it. Sick of little tax havens.

I'm proud of my 'peasant' ancestors . The aristocracy are where they are because of something their ancestors did way back, and once in that position of power it's relative easy living most of the time. My peasant ancestors have had to fight and struggle just to survive, generation after generation. The aristocracy will also likely have had to pander to royalty at times, to stay in favour, while the peasants would have had little contact with them and so have had little need to bow to them.
