Fuck, they annoy me. Most of them are just Scots-Irish saying they are Irish. As someone who descends mostly from real Gaelic, Irish Catholics it annoys the piss outta me. I am not nationalist but these fools are not Irish but something else. They don't have any god damn reason to support the I.R.A. they would be more welcome by the Orangemen.

I just get offended when all these Americans claim to be Irish, who are not really Irish. It's one thing if you actually decend from the famine immigrants but most of the "Irish-Americans" are actually descendants of the Scots-Irish settlers, and probably are mostly German or English anyway. They are probably only a little Scots-Irish to begin with.

Almost feel like I'm betraying my roots a bit, having risen a little in the world since back then. But I guess they would have wanted a more comfortable future for their descendants

I guess that depends on where in the country you are. In the Appalachian mountains there are counties where people have consistently married into Scotch- Irish families, just like there are areas where the English genome has stayed relatively stable. Before the migrations of Green Irish into the country around mid- nineteenth century, what we call Scotch- Irish now were quite content to be simply known as " Irish." They were self- consciously proud Protestants, though and when the Catholics began coming in, they started putting extra emphasis on being Scotch- Irish. Then, when the Kennedys entered the White House and " being Irish" started to become somewhat fashionable, the Scotch- Irish started to drop their " Scotch" moniker. I don't see why the IRA would object to accepting Protestant money from people eager to be accepted by the descendants of those folks their ancestors fought against. It pisses me off too, to be honest.

Ireland has the advantage of being an independent Country with an "Irish head of State" and an Irish Embassy.

Each year in March, the Irish Taoiseach visits the United States for Saint Patrick's Day. A Shamrock Ceremony takes place in the morning at the White House where a crystal bowl containing shamrock, a traditional symbol of Ireland, is presented to the President in the Oval Office. This is followed by a Friends of Ireland luncheon hosted by the House Speaker in the U.S. Capitol or the Rayburn House Office Building.

The luncheon is attended by the President, Vice President, the Taoiseach, the Speaker, and other officials. In the evening, a Saint Patrick's Day Reception takes place at the White House.
The Irish have had far stronger influence, have an Irish heritage month & even use our bagpipes and kilts to promote St Patricks.

So am not surprised Scots or Scots-Irish heritage isn't well known.

Interesting fact : a tiny bit of the duchy of Normandy was forgotten, thus it still legally exists as a possession of the English crown in the form of the Channel Islands.
I went to Jersey several times when I was younger. My auntie married a Jersey man, a LeBrun.

So the Channel Islanders will be ethnically French, then, rather than English?

They are approx. a 50/50 mix of Normans and British genetically, but would mostly identify as Jersey/Guernsey or British but not French. They are good holiday islands, nice beaches.

    Spoiler!

The Channel Isles were occupied in the war.

    Spoiler!

It looks like a beautiful area, a bit sunny for what I envision Northern Europe to be, but beautiful all the same.

There were many Irish settlers (not Scots-Irish) in the American colonies and new country BEFORE the Great Famine even started. The claim, that there were few to none, is a false forum meme that's accepted without question or study. I'm not coming down on you, by the way.
