Getting back to this I think being Northern Irish some will choose an Irish identity and some will chose British. It was partitioned when most of Ireland broke away from the UK. An Irishman in 1920 no matter where from in Ireland would also be British. I don't think you can cleanly say Northern Irish is Irish or British. What is interesting is that many Irish Protestants have opted for an Irish passport now that the UK has left the EU. Also some Irish Protestants such as Kenneth Branagh and Jamie Dornan identify as Irish. I would say that Van Morrison and Gary Moore definitely also acknowledge their Irish heritage. It is one island and even my long term ancestry goes back to the Northern Ui Neill. Not black and white.
