    Default The Cayman Islands.

    Cayman Islands.

    Culture:
    European, African, and Native influences is the strongest in The Cayman Islands.

    The main influences on the culture of the Cayman Islands come from the United Kingdom, North America, and Jamaica. In total, there are approximately 113 nationalities on the three islands that make up the country. The total population of the Cayman Islands consists of just over 55,000 people, spread throughout the island group with the majority of the people found on Grand Cayman. Roughly 20,000 are native Caymanian, with the remainder of the residents originating elsewhere in the world.

    In the past, most of the people of the Cayman Islands got their livelihood from the sea through fishing, turtle harvesting, and being merchant seamen. Cayman Sea Salt and Cayman Logwood products are now locally made and exported.

    Cuisine:
    The food of the Cayman Islands includes traditional Caribbean fare such as cassava, johnny cake, bread fruit, plantain, and meat pie. Jamaican cuisine has also found its way onto the menus of the Cayman Islands, and jerk seasoning has become popular for use on meat dishes such as chicken, fish and pork. Curry is also used frequently in rice, chicken, and fish dishes. Traditional Caymanian fare includes dishes made from turtle meat, conch, goat, and fish such as grouper and snapper with locally made Cayman Sea Salt. They also eat boiled mashed plantains, known locally as "crushed bananas"

    Music:
    The music of the Cayman Islands, a Caribbean island chain, includes a wide selection of international pop music as well as unique folk styles. The Cayman National Cultural Foundation, established in 1984, helps to preserve and promote Cayman folk music, including the organization of festivals such as Cayman Islands International Storytelling Festival, the Cayman JazzFest, Seafarers Festival and Cayfest. There is also a Pirate's Week Festival. The Cayman JazzFest, founded in 2004, is a well-known jazz festival, that draws on the islands' "deep connection" with jazz. They also play dancehall and reggae.

    The official national anthem of the Cayman Islands is "God Save the Queen". "Beloved Isle Cayman", words and music by organist Leila Ross-Shier is the official national song.[2]

    The fiddle is a popular folk instrument. Christmas music is an important part of the Cayman folk tradition, and it consists of serenading, or group singing of Christmas carols on Christmas Eve. Instruments include the fiddle, accordion, mouth organ, grater and drums.[3]

    There is a Cayman Music & Entertainers Association which represent local musicians' interests, and professional studios such as Hopscotch Studios offer recording and post-production services. Several local popular musicians are well-known, including Business Time, Natasha Kozaily, the band Suite Elite, Bona Fide Cloudburst, The Barefoot Man, Chuck and Barrie aka Sea N' B, Heat and Nicholas Johnson.

    Ethnic Racial Composition:
    * 60% Mulatto
    * 20% Black
    * 20% White

    Languages:
    The official language of The Cayman Islands is English. They also speak their own native dialect, which is English with some influences from African languages. Their dialect is of Hiberno (Southern Irish English) and British English origins, but with some influences from West African languages of the imported slaves, the Africans left some local pronunciations, Africanisms, and some words. Cayman Dialect is vastly similar to Belizean Dialect and as well Jamaican, as they share similar roots.

    Religion:
    The influences of American and European culture are most evident in the religion of the Cayman Islands, where Christianity is the most practiced religion. Within the island group, the denominations of Christianity that are practiced are Anglican, Baptist, Catholicism, Church of God, Presbyterian, and United Church, among others. Because religion is an important aspect of the culture of the Cayman Islands, most of the local businesses as well as the harbors and ports are closed on Sundays. As well, the same establishments are closed on Christmas days. The Cayman Islands also hosts a growing Jewish community. There is an unknown number of Rastafarians on the Islands.

    Sports:
    Truman Bodden Sports Complex is a multi-use complex in George Town. The complex is separated into an outdoor, six-lane 25-metre (82 ft) swimming pool, full purpose track and field and basketball/netball courts. The field surrounded by the track is used for association football matches as well as other field sports. The track stadium holds 3,000 people.

    Association football is the national and most popular sport, with the Cayman Islands national football team representing the Cayman Islands in FIFA.[citation needed]

    Rugby Union is a developing sport, and has its own national men's team, women's team, and Sevens team. The Cayman Men's Rugby 7s team is second in the region after the 2011 NACRA 7s Championship.[92]

    The Cayman Islands are members of FIFA, the International Olympic Committee and the Pan American Sports Organisation, and also compete in the biennial Island Games.[93]

    The Cayman Islands are members of the International Cricket Council which they joined in 1997 as an Affiliate, before coming an Associate member in 2002. The Cayman Islands national cricket team represents the islands in international cricket. The team has previously played the sport at first-class, List A and Twenty20 level. It competes in Division Five of the World Cricket League.[94]

    Squash is popular in the Cayman Islands with a vibrant community of mostly ex-pats playing out of the 7 court South Sound Squash Club. In addition, the women's professional squash association hosts one of their major events each year in an all glass court being set up in Camana Bay. In December 2012, the former Cayman Open will be replaced by the Women's World Championships, the largest tournament in the world. The top Cayman men's player, Cameron Stafford is No. 2 in the Caribbean and ranked top 200 on the men's professional circuit.

    Flag football (CIFFA) has men's, women's and co-ed leagues.

    Other organised sports leagues include softball, beach volleyball, Gaelic football and ultimate frisbee.

    The Cayman Islands Olympic Committee was founded in 1973 and was recognised by the IOC (International Olympic Committee) in 1976.

    In the 21st century, skateboarding has become popular among the youth.[citation needed]

    In February 2010, the first purpose built track for kart racing in the Cayman Islands was opened.[95] Corporate karting Leagues at the track have involved widespread participation with 20 local companies and 227 drivers taking part in the 2010 Summer Corporate Karting League.
