    Default Saint Lucia.

    Saint Lucia.

    Culture:
    The culture of Saint Lucia has been influenced by African, East Indian, French and English heritage. One of the secondary languages is Saint Lucian Creole French, spoken by almost all of the population.

    Saint Lucia boasts the highest ratio of Nobel laureates produced with respect to the total population of any sovereign country in the world. Two winners have come from Saint Lucia: Sir Arthur Lewis won the Nobel Prize in Economics in 1979, and the poet Derek Walcott received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1992.

    Music:
    Together with Caribbean music genres such as Calypso, Soca, Dancehall, Reggae, Compas, Zouk and Salsa, Saint Lucia has a strong indigenous folk music tradition. Each May since 1991, Saint Lucia has hosted an internationally renowned Jazz Festival. In 2013, the festival was rebranded The Saint Lucia Jazz & Arts Festival which encompassed culture, visual art, alternative music, education, fashion and food.

    The dancing in Saint Lucia comes from the Caribbean and is quite active.

    A popular folk dance is the Kwadril.

    Cuisine:
    Saint Lucian cuisine is a combination of French and British dishes. Before colonization, the Caribs and the Arawaks occupied the island, surviving on its various natural fruits and vegetables like mangoes, oranges, tangerines, avocados, and breadfruits. St Lucia is also known for its famous dish banana and salt fish; breadfruit and salt fish is also popular. Salt fish is often served with ackee, a fruit originally from Ghana that has importation restrictions due to being partially poisonous. One famous dish, bouyon, can be cooked with fish, chicken, meat, plantains, bananas, dasheen, ground yams and dumplings. Some bouyon recipes include coconut water or coconut milk. The island's British influence is seen in the variety of spices used in its cuisine, which include garlic, cinnamon, nutmeg, cocoa, parsley, cloves, and allspice. Many St Lucians have a cold glass of water or fresh coconut water after their meals.

    St Lucia's national dish is green figs and saltfish.

    The island's cuisine is a unique blend of Indeginous, West African, European (mainly British and French) and East Indian cuisine; this creates dynamic meal dishes such as Macaroni pie, Stew chicken, rice and peas, hearty fish broths or fish water, hearty soups packed full with fresh locally produced vegetables. Typical essential food stuff are potatoes, onions, celery, thyme, coconut milk, the very hot scotch bonnet peppers, flour and cornmeal. All mainstream meat and poultry are eaten in St Lucia; meat and seafood are normally stewed and browned to create a rich gravy sometimes served over ground provisions or rice. They also eat boiled mashed plantains or green bananas.

    Due to St Lucia's Indo-Caribbean population curry is very popular, however due to the blend of cooking styles, curry dishes have a distinct Caribbean twist. Roti is typically served as a fast food meal, the bread itself is very flat (sometimes very thin) and is wrapped around curried vegetables such as chickpeas and potato, seafoods such as shrimp and conch, or meats such as chicken, beef, goat and liver.

    Ethnic Racial Composition:
    * 91.1% Black & Multiracial
    * 5.6% White
    * 2.2% East Indian
    * 0.6% Native American

    Languages:
    The official language of Saint Lucia is English. However, the majority of the population also speak a local French dialect, known locally as Patois. The language is French but with some influences from West African languages. Many French colonist from Northern France (Norman French) came to Saint Lucia and intermarried with slave population which many slaves would mispronounce words and create Africanisms as well as some grammer structures. It is understood by other French speakers just fine, as long as the Saint Lucian Patois speakers speak it slowly and withdraw the use of idioms common in Saint Lucian French.

    Religion:
    About 70% of the population is Roman Catholic, influenced from the days of French Catholic colonisation and evangelisation. Most of the rest belong to other Christian denominations, including Seventh-day Adventism (7%), Pentecostalism (6%), Anglicanism (2%), and other types of Evangelical Christianity (2%); in addition, about 2% of the population adheres to the Rastafari movement.

    Sports:
    Cricket and football are the most popular sports in Saint Lucia.

    Darren Sammy was the first and only St Lucian to be called up to the West Indies Cricket Team. Darren Sammy was the first St Lucian to play Test cricket in the West Indies and his figures were the second best by a West Indian debutante after Alf Valentine took eight wickets in 1950. St Lucia annually hosts games in the West Indies limited-overs and four-day cricket competitions, usually at the Beausejour Cricket Grounds, one of the most modern facilities in West Indies cricket. Sammy played his first major international match at Beausejour in 2008, a one day international against Sri Lanka. Nadine George is another of St Lucia's leading cricketers. She was the first West Indies woman to hit a century in Test cricket and was eventually named captain of the West Indies team.

    Tennis is growing in popularity in St Lucia. The St Lucian hotel of the island offers two coobuip Junior Tournament takes place. St Lucia is also an annual competitor in the Davis Cup, an international tennis competition, with former Sportsman of the Year Vernon Lewis and Kane Easter having been two of the island's consistent players over the years. The Government of St Lucia is planning on constructing a Tennis Centre.

    Volleyball enjoyed a period of growth in the 1980s, when club rivalries between teams like Le Club and Ciceron Seagulls fuelled growth in interest. St Lucia won the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) men's and women's volleyball competitions a number of times, including having won the women's tournament when it was held for the first time at the Beausejour Indoor Facility in 2008. The Beasejour gymnasium also hosted the first round of the men's and women's FIVB World Volleyball Championships in 2009.

    There are three golf courses in St Lucia. The Sandals St Lucia golf course is equipped with 18 holes and is on the southern part of the island. The St Lucia Golf & Country club has 18 holes and Jalousie Hilton Resort & Spa has nine holes.

    Squash is also relatively popular in St Lucia. The prime squash courts of St Lucia are found in the adjoining areas of St Lucia Racquet Club and St Lucia Yacht Club. St Lucia has hosted and won several iterations of the OECS Squash Tournament.

    Netball, swimming and basketball are rapidly becoming popular around the island. The Rodney Heights Aquatic Centre is a short-course (25m) swimming facility in the north of the island. St Lucia has also won multiple OECS Championships in swimming.

    St Lucia was recently represented by a team of 48 who proceeded to Grenada on July 25, 2008 to participate in the Windward Islands Inter-School Championship Games. The tournament included Male and Female Volleyball, in which both the male and female teams were victorious, Male and Female Basketball, Netball, Football and Track and Field.

    St Lucia is also home to Levern Spencer, who is a high jumper and holds the St Lucian record of 1.94 meters.

    St. Lucia probably has one of the highest numbers of admixed Black African-Caribbean populations despite their demographics, in comparison to other islands, since most of their other ethnic groups have blended in to the African.
